Lots of people will be calling in well these next couple days across America as arguably the greatest competition in sports tips off in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament.
It’s that most wonderful time of the year when we get together and celebrate that most hallowed of virtues: Gambling.
If you’ve ever participated actively in your local office pool, you know the adage by now:
Always pick one 12-seed over a 5-seed.
Why? Because over the past blahbity blah years, there’s almost always been at least one 12-seed beat a much better (on paper) 5-seed.
These first few days get such high ratings because we hope to see an underdog go bugnuts crazy and upend a favorite. It happens a couple times every year, and they’re always the most remarkable games of this first weekend.
Underdogs rule.
In your life or in your work, you got a 12-seed?
What’s your Cinderella?
Do you have a project that’s been buried in your physical or mental drawer because its chances of success were too long to be a good bet?
You wanna bet your whole year on ‘em? Maybe not.
But why not pull it out today or tomorrow and spend a few minutes thinking about what the first step might be?
Then, go ahead and take it.
Take your best first shot.
Sure, we respect Duke and North Carolina and UCLA and the consistent favorites.
But we love the underdogs. We remember the underdogs.
We adore the buzzer-beating, no-chance, time-stopping, heart-swelling miracle kids.
Go ahead. Today. Do it.
Pick your Cinderella and take your best first shot.
The clock’s ticking, baby.
